Practice News Story 7: Speech

PRESIDENT LINCOLN DEDICATES GETTYSBURG CEMETERY
Posted: November 19, 1863. 9 a.m.

GETTYSBURG, PA (AP)- Earlier today on this war torn battlefield President Abraham Lincoln dedicated the cemetery here with one of the strongest most charismatic speeches ever spoken on this great earth. With the battle still fresh on our minds and the smell of torn up ground and smoke still lingering in the air, there wasn’t a non-solemn face in the crowd.
President Lincoln’s address fueled the crowd and can be found on the following page in its entirety. Afterwards he stayed and answered a few questions about the Civil War and his general thoughts. He said that there is “Definite signs it’s coming to a close” and that this war has been a battle over “states rights versus federal rights.” He also stated that “Divided we fall” and that the “North meets the South, South meets the North.”
Obviously President Lincoln had the voice of God in his ear to write such a stirring and uplifting speech. When asked about any of the positives that he could see coming from this terrible and great war, he responded with “We’ll come out better for this.” Everyone reading this should make sure they read the following page for the speech in its entirety. It’s sure to be something that goes down in history as one of our presidents greatest moments.
