Energy Drinks

First off, i'm not an addict. Swear to god. But to me, energy drinks are like a beer. There are times I just crave them. Try cooking a steak on the grill or order a large pizza, and sometimes I just begin to crave certain liquids to drink.

But are they really all that bad for you? First off, i'm not one of these 15 year old kids who go to the grocery store, buy one, then begin to chug it. I sip on mine over the course of 4-5 hours on some nights that I'm at work. Yes I know there's just boat loads of sugar in it and half of the addatives in it, I couldn't tell you what the heck they're for. I personally feel like half of my own wake up that comes from them is all mental.

I've never been a huge coffee drinker, even in the mornings, when it's -5 degrees outside. But whenever I get that good wiff of coffee my eyes always open up a little bit more. And I know there's nothing special in just the aroma of it.

So my belief is if you chug it, all that sugar and caffeine goes straight into your system, speeds up your heart rate, and could potentially harm you. But where I just sip it on it for hours I think i'm ok. And besides, have you ever seen all those vitamins they put in it on the back of the can?? I'm not sure I need 100% of niacin and riboflavin, but I sure feel special with them all in that can.

Racist

My job has me dealing with some of the nicest and best people I've ever met, and most days I really appreciate the interaction with some of these people. On the flip-side, I occasionally get the scum of the earth pricks who just make it their ever living goal in life to mess with everyones life. Saturday was one of those days.

Now I'm not going to go into details about what all happened, but when some lady who just happens to be African-American, starts demanding things that go above the limits of my company, to me she's just another customer. I deal with this all day. Then she starts yelling at my other coworkers that they're all "white pieces of shit" and nothing but "trailer trash." To me, this is just another day. But from there it starts turning into how we're all racist and the only reason we're not going above and out of our way and breaking our own company rules, is because she's black.

How do people justify constantly degrading people and trying to always become the victim? And how do you even throw in justifying race into that mixture. I'm not a racist, never been one. I hang out with people who are not white quite often. One of my best friends, who I consider to be almost like a sister, is black. Last time I checked, I'm still a member of the Black Student Union. And here I am, just some white kid from Utah. And I'm pretty sure I'll never try to blame my race for any problems that occur in my own life.

Politics

With this year being a presidential election year, it seems we've all been over run with constant news stories and negative adds showing off our next round of presidential hopefuls. And I don't know about most of you, but I'm so sick and tired of turning on the news every day and getting story after story of "who said what about who." It's politics. It's a dirty game and nobody in it is a squeaky clean as they all love to claim to be.

And what I'm most worried about, is in next January when the next president is elected, how will we all be reacting to it. I'm extremely worried about it, since it seems like we don't really hold any respect for our presidents anymore. What is going to happen on January 1st when a new president takes office and suddenly we have all these citizens who want to kill our current president and on that special day they turn from shouts of "Kill Bush" to "We Love So and So."

Regardless of your political alignment, what kind of a message are you sending people with these kind of slogans? So on January 1st all extreme left will take down their next criticism of our president and get behind the new one. But what of everyone who supported the current president. Are they all supposed to forget that a large number of citizens didn't support their president, so they should ignore the next one to come into office?

It just seems extremely hypocritical that on that magical day everyone who wore "Impeach Bush" t-shirts and those who supported him will switch places. Our whole political landscape needs to be re-evaluated. Regardless if you like or support this president or the next, don't you think we should have at least a little bit of respect for the presidential position? Because I'm pretty sure that's been lost over the last ten years or so.

Dear Mr. Jennings:

My name is Glen Jacobsen from the American Red Cross. As you may know, the Red Cross is a non-profit organization providing over half the nation’s blood supply through generous donations. We ask you for a donation of $100,000 worth of products to adequately replenish our donors from the loss of blood they generously give to save lives. A few minutes of refreshments gives blood donors replenishment from their decrease in fluid volume. You will also have the satisfaction of knowing you helped each blood donor save up to three lives.

As one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of snack products, you have the resources available to help fund our mission to save lives. Last year you gave over $6.4 billion in good will charities and you are known for your contributions. With the American Red Cross you, will know your money is going toward a great cause.

You will be helping to ensure that blood is there when you or someone close to you may need it. Most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.

The American Red Cross Lewis and Clark Region is a major supplier in Utah, Idaho and Montana. With the help of volunteer blood donors, the region is the primary blood supplier for over 120 hospitals and medical centers in the area. To provide care for these centers, we would like to use the money for $50,000 in drinks and $50,000 in snacks.

Thank you for taking the time to read our proposal and we look forward to hearing from you. Please contact our public relations director, Hi-C Group, for any questions at 555-357-7535 or hi-cgroup@redcross.org.

Sincerely,

Positioning Paper Assignment

JCOM 2310

As the head of PR for Burger Planet, we’ve decided to change our menu in a few different ways to bring in a wider variety of customers to all of our stores. Recent surveys have showed that women in their 30s and 40s have stopped coming to Burger Planet and we believe that this has to do with our menus containing mostly burgers and fries and the ever growing number of health conscious customers. We’d really like to see an increase in this target audience, since most women in their 30s and 40s have families and are often in charge of dinner for their families.

We’ve decided first off to bring in Jayne Petersen who has recently gained enormous commercial success due in part to her being Opal Whitcomb’s personal trainer and helping her loose and keep off weight. With her as a spokesperson, we will appear to this certain age group of ladies since a large number of them have seen her often on television and she promotes healthy lifestyles.

We’ve also added a lot of great new items to our already stellar menu that should appeal to the more health conscious customer. We’ve added white meat chicken breasts and we also offer the option to buy the chicken breast wrapped in lettuce in case they are also on a low-carb diet. Customers can also ask to hold the mayo off of their sandwich which will reduce a sandwich by as much as 500 calories. None of our competitors offers a similar entrĂ©e.

We also added apple slices to the menu so customers can choose from their choices of five different fruits: apples, bananas, grapes, peaches, or pineapples. We also added three brand new salads to give our customers another healthy option to choose. Many of our competitors have been offering salads for years and for many of our customers seem to enjoy the option of choosing them.

We will kick off our new media campaign by having a large gathering at Times Square with both Corny the Clown and Jayne Petersen there. We will also begin airing multiple commercials showing off our new items on television, the internet, and on radio and by running lots of events in multiple states.

We believe that these events will help bring in more women in their 30s and 40s along with more of the ever increasing number of health conscious consumers. By giving customers a healthy reason to come to Burger Planet, we hope to increase the number of people who come to our restaurants which will increase our revenues and give us a better public appearance.

Press Release for JCOM 2300

Corey Sparks

JCOM 2300

Assignment #2

I picked a recent press survey from BMW to do my assignment on. The press release from BMW was an announcement for the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. This announcement shows that they are taking a previous model of their MINI and their even newer Clubman and are making a higher grade model more in line for those people who like to drive everywhere like it’s a race. These two specific models are driver’s cars. From their bigger and faster engines down to their redesigned underpinnings that will help the car be more stable and able to turn sharper.

The first article I found was at a website called Autoblog. This is a site where they take all the news that comes out in the automobile industry, in this case the actual press release, and then they write an article about what they really think of it from a consumer standpoint. This article was written by Michael Harley and was a very positive overview of the press release. He goes through and talks about how the new engine will be even faster then the old one. The new suspension and transmission are both upgrades as well, along with a newly upgraded interior that give the car an even better look as well. The overall tone of the article was extremely positive, with nothing in it that showed a negative side. Even the sticker price for the car was mentioned, but right afterwards he hinted that you might need to “storm your dealers” explaining that for what you are getting, it really is a good price.

The automobile world is very vocal if they think that any new innovations that a company is coming out with soon, might be a bad idea. But the one thing you can always count on, is if you have a company, like BMW, that is highly regarded especially as a “driver’s car company” any new press release that adds to this overall idea will be regarded extremely highly. It’s just how most people want to envision driving a car everyday of their lives.

The next article I found was at a website called Winding Road that seems to cater pretty exclusively for those people who like to drive a car like they envision it should be driven. Meaning if you own a car that has any sort of history as a race car, then you shouldn’t hesitate to drive your car that same way. The article was written by Dustin P. Walsh and is another announcement for the brand new MINI’s. The cars originally debuted at the Geneva Motor Show and this article just goes into a little more explanation about them. It talks about the brand new turbocharged and direct injected engine putting out 207 horsepower and how fast to 60 miles per hour it will be. It also goes into minimal detail about some of the new upgrades: light alloy rims, light and extremely high- performance brakes, a new exhaust system, and a modified six-speed manual transmission.

The overall tone of this article is once again extremely positive as well. Both of these two editors probably pride themselves on being very knowledgeable on how to drive a car, and they both probably like BMW. Most people usually have a pretty hard time finding a lot of fault with a company like BMW, because they market themselves so well. The company logo is “BMW, The Ultimate Driving Machine.” And if you drive a BMW, you totally believe in this. Ask either one of my parents. They bought one a few years ago, and not only did I always have to hear about how great their car was, over and over again, but they were extremely proud of that car. I think with the great engineering and great marketing of their products, bring about an immense source of pride and happiness to the customers.

These two articles were actually incredibly easy to find using Google’s search engine and the simple key words from the press release. If you are in the automobile industry you probably like to talk about cars all the time. And there are multiple magazines out there that contribute to these desires. The automobile industry is changing incredibly fast, especially in the face of all the environmental concerns and the fact that the government is getting ready to enforce a few laws in the next few years. The press release that I used was very good. It talks about the upcoming cars in a way that makes them look like everybody who wants to be somebody should own one. My only complaint was after the first couple of paragraphs, it lapsed into lots of technical specs that really made me just gloss over some of the paragraphs. And the press release was incredibly long. Automobile companies are always bringing out special editions and more superior upgraded models every year, and for the most part these “new” cars are always looked upon eagerly and with a feeling of longing towards them. This press release was no different. In the past, MINI has taken the John Cooper name, upgraded their current platforms, and sold these upgraded models for a premium price above the everyday current models. It seems like they’ve found a winning idea that their consumers appreciate, and they’re following the proven road and doing it once again.

Assignment #1

Ever since I was younger, I’ve always dreamed of having a job in one of two fields; either the automobile industry or the music industry. Since the music industry seems to be fairly stagnant right now, I decided to focus mostly on getting a job one day in the automobile industry.

I’ve always been an avid reader of what this industry is up to. To latest news, rumors, and what exactly happened at certain car shows around the world, I’ve always been fascinated by it all. According to the United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the public relations field is expected to grow by approximately 22% and this was in 2004. They’ve estimated that the public relations field with grow by 18% from 2006-2016, making it a faster then average field. This figure is a few years old, but it shows how the industry is really extremely diverse and well rounded. The average yearly salary seems to be around $48,000 per year. The lowest 10% earned right about $30,000 per year while the top tier that are still considered public relations specialists make about $90,000. That’s a fairly wide and diverse field, but considering there is so many different jobs you can be qualified for with this degree, it only shows you a starting point.

My decision to go with a company like BMW, is mostly one of passion, since I’m a fan of all of their products, and because the business is flourishing for them. Last year they posted a 3rd quarter earning of 720 million euro. I’m not exactly sure how that exactly translates into dollars, but since the euro is stronger then the dollar, that’s a pretty significant quarter for them.

This next section is a little harder for me. I graduate hopefully after next spring semester. But my wife won’t graduate for at least another 2-3 years. And since she’ll be doing a lot with the education field, and USU has such a good school of education, I’m kind of stuck here in Cache Valley until she’s done. I know there are jobs in public relations around here, but they’re significantly harder to find then in a larger city.

Objectives Output

I’d like to start a network of viable social contacts in the automobile industry within the next two years.

I plan on attending a few car shows in the next few years. I also have some pretty good contacts from my father since he works in a field related to the automobile industry. I could possibly get some contacts from him and expand on them. I’d also like to actually apply to a few different companies off of their websites and see what different companies are primarily looking for.

Gain an entry level job in an agency or another similar company within a year of graduation.

A lot of the jobs I see myself in further down the road, I’d need a few years of basic getting used to the industry first. I see working in an agency or a similar environment to be advantageous to that cause. Even getting a job in a larger company where you get to work with more people so it’s not so much of a single person does the whole job would let me get used to the work.

Be happily employed in the automobile field within 3 years of graduation.

I set the date a little further away then most people, because I know I’ll be in Logan for at least another three years. It’s not my first choice, but some times you have to make a few sacrifices to get where you want to be.

I’d like to send out my professional resume to at least 12 different companies when it gets time to look for a job.

There are approximately 12 or so companies out there that I’d like to at least send my resume to. Hopefully by this time I’ve gotten a little more educated in the actual field and will be well qualified for positions they are looking to fill.

Impact

Next time I go to a car show, I expect to leave with at least 5-10 business cards and hopefully get some inside information on what they expect from new hires.

I’m hoping that this kind of information will help me get a little bit more of an idea on what kinds of values and experiences that they look for specifically when hiring new employees.

I expect to hear back from at least 3 of the companies that I sent my resumes to.

I’m aiming for a 25% rate of hearing back from some of these major companies. I’m not sure if that’s a realistic number or not, but I believe that all of these companies are good companies. Good companies are always looking for new ideas and people, even if they don’t realize it at that time.

I expect to have an offer from one of these 3 companies that I heard back from within a month of being replied back from them.

I usually consider myself a fairly fast mover when it comes to getting things done and moving them along as fast as I can. With a positive reply on hand and an opening in the company that I’m qualified for, I imagine that I can accept the job, pack up, and move to wherever that I’m needed. There really is no reason to waste time when you have what you want within arms reach.

Try finding a stock that has that much of a guaranteed return anywhere else.” Both Wall Street and the SEC have both approached this company in hopes to take this idea nationally, but we want to start locally first and give Utahans and other everyday people the right to get in on this amazing new investment opportunity.

ABC Real Estate is originally from Draper, UT and has since spread its offices all over the state and up into the Logan area. Bret Cob, president of ABC Real Estate, has been in the real estate business for many years and studied under his mentor in California.

Now is the time to take action, make an incredible investment, so you can be better off financially in the years to come. ABC Real Estate does all the paperwork, finds the tenants, and guarantees the whole process. When it comes down to it, can you really let this once in a lifetime opportunity pass you up?

Letter to Cousin

Dear Cousin Stan,

Last week we were talking about my Public Relations major at Utah State University and I know you had questions that we didn’t have time to talk about. So I decided to write you a letter in hopes that it clarifies and sheds a little light on public relations.

Public Relations to me help bridge that gap between the normal every day person and organizations and corporations. A lot of the writing used in public relations takes the effect of press releases. Press releases are kind of like a memo that companies send out to radio, television, newspapers, magazines, etc that give information about a new product, people doing something out of the ordinary, or anything else that they figure people would like to know. Like when I was a work last week and got the fax saying that Linkin Park was coming so we decided to get tickets. They also use press releases to release financial earnings every so often.

Lots of companies have public relations teams that work with marketing, human resources, and customer service areas. There are also companies that are referred to as agencies that do public relations with large companies that give them a contract to help them out.

As you could tell when we talked, I’m very excited to be a public relations major at USU. The classes have been very fun, extremely educational, and has really made going to college worth it. Hope this helps you out with some of your confusion. I’ll see you in a few weeks at the family party.

New Year; New Posts

Hey it's been a while since I've made a new post on here. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a safe New Year's Eve. I know mine was great. Well I worked too much, but it's always great to go out and do the whole family thing as well.
I recently got engaged right before the new year began, so hopefully I won't be too out of it for a while.
